Meet the Overnight Crew at 571 South: Captain Terri Braund

When the sun goes down at Midwest States 100 and runners continue moving through the woods, Terri Braund and her overnight crew will be waiting for them at 571 South.

And if you’ve spent much time at an Ornery Mule Racing event this year, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve already seen Terri.

She has volunteered at every OMR race in 2026, often captaining multiple aid stations.

But there’s a pretty special reason Terri decided to spend this year giving back.

From Runner to Super Volunteer

Last year, Terri earned her Run Your Ass Off buckle, an accomplishment made even more meaningful by the challenges she faced getting there.

Health issues severely impacted her training, and Terri credits the OMR community and race volunteers with helping her make it through.

In Terri’s words:

“Last year I earned my RMAO buckle. I also was plagued with health issues that severely hurt my training. The only reason I was able to get my buckle was with the help and encouragement of the OMR crew and the amazing volunteers at each race.”

Terri still isn't able to return to running, but she decided that wasn't going to keep her away from the trail community.

Instead, she made a commitment:

“I am committed to being at every 2026 OMR race to help others accomplish their goals.”

And she has done exactly that.

Race after race. Aid station after aid station.

Now she is bringing that same energy to 571 South, where she and her crew will take care of Midwest States runners through the night.

She knows firsthand just how much the person standing behind an aid station table can matter when a runner is struggling.

Next Stop: The Porkies

Midwest States isn't Terri's final stop this year.

You can also find her at the inaugural Porkies Wilderness Race, where she'll captain the Jeep Duck-themed Speakers Aid Station, the aid station that will remain open longer than any other station at the race.

Porkies is also especially meaningful to Terri because her son, Kyle Braund, has been part of developing the race from the beginning and serves as one of its Course Directors.

As Terri puts it:

“I am especially excited for the Porkies Wilderness Race as it is the first race Kyle has been involved in from the very beginning and will take me up to the land he has fallen in love with. Of course, the fact that I get to have a duck themed aid station is a major plus.”

We have a feeling Terri is going to have a lot of fun with that last part. 🦆
